Jim Lalor leads in trainers’ competition

The successful Ashburton trainer, Jim Lalor, already has a commanding lead over his contemporaries in his bid to earn the winner’s slice of a *lOOO prize put up by the Canterbury-Westland Owners and Trainers’ Association for the most successful trainer on the current five-day West Coast circuit. The combined efforts of horses saddled by Lalor at

Reefton on Wednesday earned their trainer 23 points in the competition. Jim Lalor’s brother, Tom, from Riccarton, was the runner-up after Wednesday’s racing. He goes into the second day of the contest at Kumara today with 13 points. The Orari trainer, Ray Pankhurst, is at present in third place, with 11 points, one more than Riccarton’s Helen Preston and two

more than the Tuahiwi training partners, Barbara and Ray Harris. The competition will continue at the Westland Racing Club’s meeting at Hokitika on Monday and will also take in the Greymouth Jockey Club’s two-day meeting at Omoto next Friday and the, following Tuesday. The winning trainer will receive a cash prize of $750 and the runner-up will receive *250.
