Rail travel
Sir,—Comments by the Minister of Transport and the Mayor of Greymouth indicate that they do not . travel long distances by coach. During the last year ! have travelled several times in both islands by train and coach and always prefer train travel. Although coaches are improving constantly? they could not compete with the comfort and spaciousness of a new rail-car. My teen-age daughter and her friend are regular Wellington-Auckland travellers and dread the trip if it is coach travel. They prefer the spaciousness of trains. New rail-cars would further improve this.' Instead of making negative forecasts, surely these two men and railway administrators could spend time promoting imaginative marketing plans promoting rail travel, similar to that done by airlines, with special incentives to attract passengers on off-peak days to fill seats and avoid the constant need to increase fares. A progressive image for passenger rail travel would attract customers. — Yours, etc.,
