AUSTRALIA Miners lead prices up

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer in mixed trading yesterday, despite the Wall Street fall, the mining sector leading the market up. BHP traded heavily, with about 1.9 M shares traded, and the stock firmed 2c to 890. Among other market leaders, CSR shed 1c to 373 and Bell Resources lost 2c to 588. Heavy-weight miners were generally stronger with the exception of CRA, which dropped 12c to 584. Western Mining gained 12c to 352, Peko 4c to 524 and North Broken Hill the same to 242 on rumours of an impending partial take-over by Industrial Equities, Ltd. New listings failed to generate any excitement on the market. Antimony Nickel put on 2c to 22, Australian Carbon steadied at 50c and Mincoa shed 5c to 20.
