New shed Young active president for show’s produce
A new shed has been built for tomorrow’s Duvat'chelle show.
Members of the Peninsula Horse Show and Pastoral Association have been busy during the past two months putting the shed together, said the association’s president, Mr Tim Craw.
The shed has been built to house the domestic produce of the show.
For many people, the horse section will be of most interest, but there are many other attractions and activities to entice people along to the show.
A marquee will house the Young Farmers’ Fleece competition, the Spinners’ and Weavers’ Guild and a display by the Coloured Sheep Society. Members of the guild will spin and weave using different fibres, and a variety of finished garments will be on display. A competition to guess the fibre and weight of fleeces will be held.
An audio-visual display promoting farm forestry will be presented by the New Zealand Forest Service. This area has potential for this type of primary production. Rougher areas and gullies could be planted in trees without detracting from other farming activities.
The new shed at the showgrounds will contain the entries in the domestic produce, handcraft, wine, fruit and vegetable and flower classes. Art and photographs will also be on display. Local deer farmers will have a display on deerfarming. The dog trial course has been changed this year and spectators will have a better view.
The course will be a head, drive and pen contest — three sheep are to be driven through a set of poles, then taken through an opening in a fence and then yarded. Sheep, horse and ponies will be on show. This year, the horse entries are down, 795 compared with 1090 in 1985, but the sheep entries are up, from 103 last year to 125 this year.
For younger members of the community there are classes for pet lambs, and junior classes in handcraft and cooking. The shearing competition starts at 10 a.m. There are classes for open, senior and intermedite shearers, as well as for Young Farmers Club members and veterans. Some good prizes are available in this section.
A tug of war between local teams should provide good entertainment.
