Policeman will be charged
NZPA-PA London A policeman will be charged with manslaughter over the shooting of a boy, aged five, at his Birmingham home last year, the Police Complaints Authority said yesterday. The Director of Public Prosecutions decided that there should be criminal proceedings for Wan-
slaughter against Constable Brian Chester arising from the shooting of John Shorthouse on August 24. John was shot and killed as he lay in bed when armed West Midlands police raided his home. They had gone there to arrest his father, John, who was wanted in connection with an armed robbery of a Welsh restaurateur.
The decision that Constable Chester, aged 35, should be prosecuted was taken after lengthy inquiry. Constable Chester, a father of three, has been suspended from duty since the incident. He has been a policeman for 16 years and has received four commendationfe including one for bravery:
