Detonator exploded
Rangiora reporter
Three youths escaped injury when they exploded a railway warning detonator outside a crowded disco in the Hanmer Springs Hall on Wednesday evening. The three schoolchildren exploded the device with a concrete block. This created a mine-like explosion and scattered residue over eight sqare metre. The three youths said they found the device near a railway line in the Kaikoura district, said Constable Peter Gilfedder of Hanmer Springs. The police were now inquiring in the Kaikoura district about the security of the detonators. Charges would also be considered against the youths, all juveniles, he said. The detonators are placed on railway tracks to warn train drivers that there is work being done on the track ahead.
