Devoy to wed
PA Rotorua The world women’s squash champion, Susan Devoy, is to tie the knot with a long-time friend, John Oakley, of Christchurch.
The news of the much expected engagement was broken to Susan Devoy’s parents in Rotorua on Wednesday night after the pair had returned from the Bay of Islands. A delighted Susan Devoy said the proposal was made over dinner at Waitangi on Tuesday night. After a training run together yesterday morning the happy pair were to scout round the shops in Rotorua in quest of an engagement ring.
News of the engagement was broken by Devoy’s British coach, Bryce Taylor, after a late-night phone call on Wednesday. The pair plan to marry in Rotorua in early December. They first met at a tournament in the South Island, though neither can recall exactly where, two years ago. The romance blossomed and last year Oakley travelled with Devoy to tournaments round the world.
Oakley is a well performed squash player in his own right, having been selected in the New Zealand under-23 team in 1980. He is ranked third in Canterbury behind his brother-in-law Paul Viggers and Craig Hibbert.
