Zimbabwe tour canned
NZPA London The Zimbabwe leg of the England “B” team’s tour will be officially called off by Lord’s today. The secretary, Donald Carr, said yesterday that the Test and County Cricket Board was expecting a telex confirming that the Zimbabwe Government will not alter its stance banning four players with South African cricket connections. Mr Carr told the players of the Lord’s decision when they gathered at Heathrow
last night to fly off on the one remaining leg of the tour to Sri Lanka. “It’s sad but inevitable,” he said, adding that under no circumstances would the Test and County Cricket Board have captitulated to demands by Zimbabwe that the four players sign statements condemning apartheid. “That would be contrary to the principles of the International Cricket Conference and our own policy,” Mr Carr said.
