Gurkhas set record

The famed fighting spirit of the Gurkhas brought them new glories in Hong Kong when 170 of them staged a world record assault on a Land-Rover. The assault in aid of charity was made by Nepalese soldiers from the 28th Squadron of the Transport Regiment by piling on to the sturdy, four-wheel-drive vehicle in 51 seconds.

An Army spokesman said it broke the record set by 153 British soldiers in the Noel Edmonds’ “Late Late Breakfast Show” of BBC Television in November, 1984, when they squeezed into a Land-Rover within a minute.

The spokesman explained that the feat was to put as many people as possible into the vehicle within a minute. He said he would write to the “Guinness Book of Records” with all the related data but “it is up to them to decide.” The spokesman quoted the Gurkhas as saying that they were pleased to have succeeded in breaking a record.
