Grog may cause brain to shrink

NZPA Sydney Getting on to the grog, even socially, could lead to more than a hangover or a bit of merriment — a Sydney neuropathologist says it could cause the brain to shrink. In an article in the latest “Australian Medical Journal,” Professor Clive Harper of Sydney University said brain shrinkage was seen not only in a high proportion of alcoholic patients, but also in social drinkers. He said cerebral shrinkage was one of the more important and puzzling aspects of long-term alcohol abuse. However he held out a ray of hope — staying off the booze for prolonged periods can reverse the trend, especially in young people. He said many brain-scan studies of people suffering alcoholism had shown the possibility of at least partly reversing shrinkage after prolonged abstinence from alcohol.
