Canty life-savers have success

The Canterbury surf lifesaving team had some pleasing results in the first carnival of its tour of Victoria last Sunday. A second carnival scheduled for Tuesday night had to be abandoned because of galeforce winds. The highlight of the tour will be a contest against the Victorian team on January 19. The first carnival was at Lome, near Melbourne. The surf was flat and the courses long which suited the Canterbury competitors. Canterbury won both the beach sprints and was second in the beach flags and beach relay. Lars Humer produced the best performance in the Canterbury team to win the iron man, an event at which the Australians excel. Peter Cox was second and Simon Davis was fourth in the same event. Cox had a creditable third in the malibu board and Davis filled the same place in the surf ski. He was beaten by two members of the Australian Olympic canoe team. Canterbury was third in the Taplin relay and the North Beach crew was third in the surf boat race.
