Fewer marriage splits
Washington NZPA-AP After two decades of increasing numbers of United States divorces, the Government is reporting a second consecutive year when fewer marriages were dissolved. The Government’s new figures, released by the National Centre for health statistics, showed a 1 per cent decline in divorce in 1983, after a 4 per cent drop in 1982. There were 1,158,000 divorces in the United States in 1983, 12,000 fewer than 1982, the centre said. The declines reversed a twodecade trend that had seen the number of United States divorces more than triple to an all-time high of 1,213,000 in 1981.
