High wages will mean fewer jobs

PA Wellington Jobs will be scarcer this year because of the level of wage settlements last year, said the Employers Federation. Its director of communications, Mr Alan Emerson, said job prospects are “a lot more dismal” now than at the same time last year. “Our research certainly indicates that there won’t be a fraction of the job opportunities this year that there were last year,” Mr Emerson said. “We have had companies seeking redundancy agreements, and that hasn’t been done for 18 months.” He said the level of the wage settlements was responsible for that. “Last year, it was 6.5 per cent. This year it’s 15.5 per cent. “That is going to translate directly into employment, and it is going to start with non-replacement of staff and redundancy.”
