Street-racing
Following Adelaide and other cities throughout the world in which motor races are held in the streets, Birmingham will hold its first real race next August, during the bank holiday week-end. It has already held a series of spectacular motor-racing demonstrations in conjunction with its motor show.
Birmingham’s Parliamentary Bill has been given Royal assent and the city is now seeking sponsors to finance the event around a four kilometre city centre circuit.
Initial plans include For-
mula 3000 races to focus attention on Birmingham which hopes to stage the 1992 Olympic Games.
The race meeting will be known as the Birmingham Super Prix and David Lucas, the Birmingham city council’s race co-ordinator, hopes to see the fixture develop into an annual event not unlike the Le Mans 24 hour sports car race. Others backing the Birmingham meeting believe that the city could be staging a full-scale world championship Formula One race within three years.
