Blovinski in convincing win

By

ALEX McMILLAN

The highly promising Ric-carton-trained four-year-old, Blovinski, carried his supporters through with a convincing win in the D.B. Reefton Challenge Gold Cup at Reefton yesterday. The son of Palatable was given a splendid run behind the leaders by Grant Davison, but appeared to be under some pressure to improve 400 m from home on a track that was cutting out noticeably after steady midafternoon rain.

“He hit a ‘flat’ patch near the turn, but stretched out really well in the straight. He’s a bit lazy but very smart,” said Davison, who was recording his third win in the race, having earlier been successful on last year’s winner, Frontline, and Royal Adder. Davison had ridden four winners at the meeting last year and the win on Blovinski was his third for the day yesterday. Blovinski demonstrated the class of a genuine stayer to score his half-length win yesterday, beating Eggnogg,

also sired by Palatable, with Rusty’s Image, a much-improved third after forcing much of the pace with Cappiemore before that well supported runner drifted out of contention in the final 400 m to finish last.

Blovinski was recording his fifth win in the colours of Mrs Greta Lalor, the wife of the gelding’s Riccarton trainer, Tom Lalor, who had an interest as an owner in two earlier Reefton Cup winners, Robanna and Butch, both of, which were trained by his brother, Jim. Blovinski was originally raced on lease by Mrs Lalor from his Christchurch breeder, Mr Bill Tapp, and the right of purchase was exercised after the gelding scored his fourth career win at Kurow on December 30. Grant Davison will take the mount on Blovinski in the $17,500 Centennial Nuggets at Kumara. He had the choice of rides between Blovinski and Vrinsk, but was quick to confirm Blovinski as his mount for that feature on dismounting yesterday.
