Minister names deputies

PA Wellington The former Chief Human Rights Commissioner, Mr Patrick Downey, was one of three people appointed as deputy members of the Union Membership Exemption Tribunal, Said the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger. The others are the Rev. Roderick Falconer and Mr Bryan Boland. The tribunal considers applications for exemption from union membership. Deputy members have been appointed to ensure that hearings on any applications are not held up by the absence or illness of any of the members. Mr Downey, a practising barrister in Wellington, was the Chief Human Rights Commissioner from the establishment of the Commission in 1978 until 1984. He was the co-chairman of the Human Rights Standing Committee of Lawasia, a professional legal association for Asia and the Western Pacific. Mr Falconer has a doctorate in theology and a Diploma in Business Administration. He has been involved in the work of the Inter-church Trade and Industry Mission for 13 years and is its director in Auck; land.
