Canterbury captain scores 96

The highlight of the first day’s play in the Hansell’s women’s cricket tournament was a splendid 96 by the Canterbury captain, Lesley Murdoch.

After a steady start, Murdoch’s innings blossomed towards the end with a number of lofted pulls through mid-wicket and back foot drives.

She was unlucky to miss her century when trying to force the pace. Her innings enabled Canterbury to get through to 220 for four after being put in to bat. Southern Districts was then reeling at 68 for six in reply. The spinner, Catherine Campbell, did most of the damage in a fine spell, taking five for 22. Southern Districts’ problems were compounded by the loss of the captain, Jenny Olson, with an ankle injury. Wellington struggled to score runs against Central Districts and was restricted to 115 for eight off 70 overs. Liz Signal and Mary Connell bowled a tight line and length and made life difficult for the Wellington batsmen.

Only Ingrid van der Elst got on top of the bowling. Central Districts made a good start in reply but after being 100 for one, collapsed in the middle order to 169 for nine.

Auckland’s bowling attack did well to restrict the fancied North Shore team to 165 in its 70 overs.

Shore’s batsmen all got a start but were not able to put together a substantial innings. The best partnership of the innings was between Sue Rattray and a newcomer, Elizabeth Moore, who put on 50 for the sixth wicket. Shona Gilchrist was the best of the Auckland bowlers, taking three for 55. In reply Auckland managed just 64 off 49 overs. Scores.—
