Lord Paul likely in Winton Cup
Special correspondent
Invercargill Lord Paul and Queen’s Advocate, all things even, look set to fight out the finish of the Winton Trotting Club’s Winton Trotting Cup today. On paper, they stand out, especially since the scratching of Scurry was announced. Only Bamborough’s Pride, the Gore Cup winner, seems capable of testing the two favourites.
Lord Paul, which has come really solid for Harry Cox this season, beat all but the exciting mare, Trish Mist, over 2200 m at his last start at the Invercargill meeting. The run was encouraging evidence of the Kess he has made in the ip to this feature. In a desperate three-way finish on that occasion, Queen’s Advocate was only a neck away in third place.
He, too, has been racing consistently well. His Southland record win over 3200 m on this course last month will still be fresh in the minds of many looking for today’s winner. Springfield Countess, which won stylishly on both days of the Invercargill meeting, is likely material for the second leg, the Winton Hotel Handicap, for four-year-olds.
