Astounding feats by junior bowlers
Four outstanding bowling feats were performed recently in junior cricket ; matches. Shane Bond, Adrian McFedries, James Butler, and Glen Hurley all .recorded hattricks while turning in astounding figures with the bail. Bond, playing for Belfast, took six wickets for only ten runs. He was well supported by Michael Rusbatcn and Stefan Hall, who both took two cheap wickets. Special mention must be made of Matthew Wilson who kept wicket tidily and competently. McFedries finished with the figures of 3 for 5, playing for Burnside-West. Another highlight in this game was an excellent all-round performance from James Butler, who took 5 for 12 and made 34 runs.
Not to be outdone, Butler also captured three wickets in
three consecutive balls, thus registering the most unusual feat of two hat-tricks in one innings of a match by two different bowlers.
Hurley recorded his hattrick at the higher level of representative play during a quadrangular tournament involving Canterbury, Wellington, Marlborough and Hutt Valley. The hat-trick enabled Canterbury to beat Marlborough, with other notable performances turned in by Jonathan Hearn (31), Stephen Fleming. (30), David Culpan (29) and Allan Hickford (M). Apart from Hurley, other bowlers to stand out were Robert Allison, 3 for 9, and Vaughan Hartland, who took 3 for 11.
Canterbury followed this victory with a loss to Wellington. Hickford continued his good form with 29 runs, while Wayne Stead contributed 18 to the team total of 88.
Wellington had earlier batted to reach 106 for five declared.
Other representative matches played recently provided mixed fortunes for Canterbury teams. A Canterbury invitation team drew with the West Coast at the picturesque surroundings of Medbury. Canterbury batted first and
reached the large score of 217, with Simon Packman (46) and Chris Bell (40) batting extremely well, and being unlucky not to register half centuries with both being the victims of superb run outs. Bowling for the West Coast, Gary Mahuika captured 6 for 55 and Tim Rankin took 2 for 49 with both bowling well. In reply, the West Coast managed to hold on for a draw and were 165 for 9 at stumps with Jason Mehrtens making 44 not out Bevan Seddon and Chris Bell performed well with the ball taking 4 for 29 and 4 for 39 respectively. Canterbury B had a draw with North Otago. North Otago batted especially well, and reached the large total of 202 for the loss of only three wickets.
Those mainly responsible for the team being able to declare at this score were Gerrard Ward (54), Jason Jackman (43), Stephen Brent (29), and Mike Davidson (29 not out). All four batted extremely well. Canterbury B was 85 for five when the game finished, and almost half of their runs were scored by Paul Hilton (21 not out) and Scott Flewellen (21). Brent Matheson performed well for North Otago, taking 2 for 10. The following day, Canter-
bury B played Central Otago. Canterbury batted first, and reached 122 with Flewellen again showing out, scoring 45 well compiled runs, and Andrew Shannon supporting well with 28. Ben Gordon was mainly responsible for the relatively low score capturing 5 for 30 with an effective spell at the bowling crease. Gary McSkimming also contributed well, taking 3 for 26. Defending its total was never going to be easy for Canterbury, however,’ it performed very doggedly and cap-* ably. With the Medbury bowler, Henry Blakely, leading the way with 4 for 26, Canterbury had Central Otago seven wickets down before the winning runs were scored. Richard Mowat took 2 for 21 while Stephen Moorhead distinguished. himself with good fielding. John Scott and David Arneson saw their team through to victory, being 33 not out and 28 not out at the end.
Also on Monday, a match was played between BurnsideWest representatives and the West Coast. After being delayed for nearly three hours a which both teams indoor cricket, the match was restricted to a limited twenty five-over game.
Burnside made 132 for 9 with Blair Milne (47) and Jason Fahey (37 not out) batting well David Watson took three wickets for seventeen runs bowling for the West Coast
In reply to Burnside’s total, West Coast was 68 for 8 with Blair Milne completing a fine all round display by taking 3 for 15 and Hamish Philpott capturing 2 for 10. Jason Mehrtens top scored for the West Coast, making 16. In Christchurch club matches, several good performances have been evident
For Burnside-West in D grade, Dean Robinson recently made 23 runs and then took two wickets for only eight runs. In the same match, Andrew Cox took two wickets without conceding a run. In C grade, John Edgington and Richard Hoffman both turned in two excellent performances during a match for Sydenham.
