Anti-nuclear bill

Sir,—We who follow the dubious game of politics were well aware that the New Zealand Party was divided over Bob Jones’s radical defence policy. Mr Earle Thompson (December 26) has confirmed this. He is, however, mistaken in branding those anti-nuclear as, ipso facto; anti-American. The letter following his was from two Americans op-' posed to the Reagan Administration’s nuclear policies. There are millions' like them and we greatly value their support Of all eligible Americans fewer than 30 per cent voted for Reagan in 1980 and 1984: Extravagant labels from Mr Thompson like “weak, foolish, gutless, pious, mindless and moralising” spoil his case. Our Government is not alone in its stand. Almost identical attitudes are taken by Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Rumania, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Arms and alliances have invited and initiated wars throughout history. Nuclear alliances inrite obliteration—that is" fact, not fiction.—Yours, eta, M. T. MOORE. December 26, 1985.
