Deer theft action
A nationwide stock theft information system, designed to determine the extent of deer thefts, is being developed by the New Zealand Deerfarmers’ Association. The scheme follows a report prepared for the association on stock security, poaching and theft by a former policeman, Mr Piers Hunt The association wil work closely with police to design and operate a service which will allow patterns of thefts to be mapped, the associatin’s executive director, Mr
David Hickman, said. If several farms in an area were losing deer, the association would collate that information and warn members to take precautions, he said. The police have difficulty linking deer thefts committed by the same people in separate police districts, Mr Hickman said. A report containing recommendations from Messrs Hickman and Hunt on how the scheme should operate will be presented to the association soon.
