Salary claim referred back
PA Wellington The secondary teachers’ salary claim has been referred back to the Government, and further talks are unlikely until late January or early February. The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association assistant general secretary, Mr Kevin Bunker, said that discussion with the Education Services Committee had gone as far as possible, and the matter now needed to be considered by the. Government, That would not be possible for at least another month.
However, he said good progress had been made in the talks, and the association was hopeful of* a positive outcome.
“It is really all eyes back on the Government now,” he said.
Mr Bunker said the association believed it had a good case, and that without a satisfactory outcome the
Government’s commitment to improving secondary education would be in jeopardy. "Changing sdtoofc depends on having teachers.” 1 He said it was not possible to say at this stage whether teachers would hold stop-work meetings at the start of next year to , consider progress on the ; claim. -S.•
