Bacton Abbey wins
Special correspondent Dunedin The Alexandra-owned and Ashburton-trained Bacton Abbey easily won the Otago Racing Club’s Dunedin Guineas and J. B. Reid Cup yesterday. Bacton Abbey finished strongly from close to the pace and won by three and a half lengths. He is raced by Laurie Agnew and Ritchie Matthews and trained by Peter and Pawn Williams. Peter Williams paid $5OOO for Bacton Abbey (Norfolk Air—Silver Robin) on behalf of Mr Agnew at the Waikato Yearling Sales last January. Mr Matthews, a friend! of
Mr Agnew, then accepted the offer to buy a half share.
Mr Agnew, a motor sales representative, raced Red Ensign, which won five races and finished third in a New Zealand Cup when trained by Rex Cochrane. Trinket was a winner for him from the Williams stable.
Mr Agnew’s wife, Rosalie, races Sea Swift, which has won three races for the Williams. Mr Matthews raced Emcee, which won six when trained by Rex Cochrane. Bacton Abbey, which won a highweight on the first day, has the Blue Riband
(2000 m at Waikouaiti on New Year’s Day as his next assignment. Star Fraction, the favourite, was a clear second after racing in third place on the outside and leading at the 350 m. He was not happy in the easy ground, according to his rider, Grant Davison.
