Stakes win for Crystal Brook
Special correspondent
Dunedin Crystal Brook overcame a check in the running to easily win the Otago Breeders’ Champagne Stakes at the Otago Racing Club’s meeting at Wingatui yesterday.
Sstal Brook was ed to the rear in the early stages but improved wide out from the 500 m. She was giving the pacemaker, Ave Regina, a handy start early in the run home but finished at a great rate to win by a length. “I never hit her with the whip,” said her rider, Grant Davison. “I gave her a kick at the top of the straight but there was no response. Once I showed her the whip she took off.”
The Star Way — Inhabitant filly, which is trained at Riccarton by Dave Kerr for Mr Don Cameron, of Tauranga, had won her other start a fortnight earlier at Riccarton.
“It’s a lucky course for Mr Cameron,” said Jan Kerr, the trainer’s wife, who brought Crystal Brook south.
She had previously brought Clansman to Wingatui for Mr Cameron, and he had won the Hazlett Stakes and Galaxy Stakes.
