Wool values firm 5 per cent
Crossbred wool prices rose another 5 per cent at a sale of Invercargill wool at Christchurch yesterday. The falling value of the New Zealand dollar led to improved prices last week at Dunedin and Napier sales and this trend continued yesterday. The market indicator was 491 c clean (compared with 466 c at Dunedin) and 365 c greasy (346 c The Wool Board was required t give very little support to the market, bidding on 262 bales and buying, or having passed to it, only four bales (0.1 per cent of the offering).
The main buyers came from Eastern Europe and the Far East and they were supported by West European and New Zealand mills. Compared with the Dunedin sale, prices for fine (33 micron) and medium crossbred (34-35 micron) were fully 5 per cent dearer. Strong crossbred fleece (36-37 micron) and second shear prices were up 5 per cent and crossbred crutchings were described as on a par to 4 per cent dearer. Crossbred skirtings were fully 5 per cent stronger, better style oddments were
2.5 to 5 per cent dearer, and poorer oddments rose by up to 7.5 per cent. The following is the range of clean prices issued by the Invercargill Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the New Zealand Council of Wool Exporters. Fine crossbred, 33 micron: Good to 520. Medium crossbred, 35 micron: Good to 511, good to average to 505. Strong crossbred, 37 micron: Good to 504, good to average to 502, poor to 500. Shorn hogget Fine crossbred, 30/31 micron, 75/100mm: Good to 504. Crossbred, 33/34 micron, 75/ 125 mm: Good 510 to 515.
Second shear ” Crossbred, 37 micron, 75/ 125 mm: Good to 503, good to average to 501. Crossbred, 37 micron, 50/ 100 mm: Good to 499, good to average to 491.' . ~ Necks Fine crossbred, 32 micron: Average to good to 513. ; Pieces Crossbred, 35 micron: Average to 453.
