History unlikely to be repeated

A humorous memo circulated to Lyttelton Borough Council staff recently heaped lavish praise' on the significance of two ‘apparently mundane council appointments. Two council employees, Messrs Ross Currie and Paul Yaxley, have recently been made official stock rangers for the borough. Their task, although important, is not particularly glamorous. They are merely to ensure that wandering stock is impounded. “The Press” was somewhat bemused to receive a letter announcing the appointments. These two appointments are the first since 1874 when the late Bill Dags (later anointed (sic) Sir William Dags and later still appointed the first official stock ranger to Queen Victoria) filled the position of pound ranger. He was called this because he paid the council a pound per annum for the privilege of using this title. “The present two incumbents have a far more responsible position and fortunately are not required to pay for the honour involved. Unfortunately their chances of being knighted are not good although this could depend on recognition of their efforts by the GovernorGeneral over the next thirty years. “The Governor-General has approved, with his blessings, the appointment of the two supervisors. All P.E.P. workers and fellow supervisors are honoured to be associated with these two gentlemen in the time of their finest hour.” The letter was signed by Mr B. R. Gardiner, the borough’s manager of P.E.P. workers. Mr Gardiner has since assured “The Press” that the letter was a joke. ARRIVALS Tasman Venture (6.30 a.m.), 5561, Tauranga (Scales).
