Historic birth at deer stud
PA Wellington The Forest Park Deer Stud at Taupo said it had achieved a world first with the caesarian birth on Wednesday afternoon of an elk calf out of a red deer mother. The birth culminates a three-year embryo transplant programme by the
No live births were achieved during the first two years but in the latest successful attempt eight embryo transplants were made and five held. The
stud said the remaining calves should be born today. The hinds in the programme were selected from 100 possible candidates with the selection process mainly based on temperament and ease of handling. Red deer hinds are not expected to be able to successfully feed the elk calves, which are larger than a red deer calf. The calves will obtain colostrum only from the mothers and be put bn saanen milking goats.
The value of elk calves is estimated to be about ?15,000 after three months.
