Edberg to play second singles

NZPA-Reuter Munich The defending champion, Sweden, took a gamble yesterday for the Davis Cup final against West Germany starting tomorrow by not naming a replacement for the sick Anders Jarryd. The Swedish coach, Hans Olsson, said he would not replace Jarryd before today’s deadline for nominations even though Jarryd’s chances of playing are virtually nil.

He said the Australian Open champion, Stefan Edberg, would take the second singles position behind Mats Wilander but the doubles pair would not be named until an hour before Sunday’s match. “Jarryd is the most experienced member of the team,” Olsson explained. “He and Edberg form one of the best doubles partnerships in the world. Even if there is only a slight chance that Jarryd can play, I must take that risk.”

Jarryd, aged 24, was unable to train again yesterday because of influenza, though he did watch the morning’s practices and said he was improving.

Asked about the risk of going into the final with only three fit players, Mr Olsson replied with a smile: “It’s very unlikely that two others will get injured, but if they do, this is my last press conference.” Mr Olsson said Wilander would probably team with Joakim Nystrom in the doubles
