Stablemates trial well at Riccarton

. The Thief and Snowdrift, runners for the Dave Kerr stable in the Timaru Racing Club’s Show Gate Stakes next week, stepped lively when they galloped in company at Riccarton yesterday. They hurried through their 800 m on the No. 1 grass in 47.45, the last 600 m in 35.45. The Thief cleared maidens impressively at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting and has the scope to develop into one of the best three-year-old South Island fillies this season. Canterbury Belle, the star of the Kerr team, yesterday sprinted 800 m on the grass in 47.65. Noble Note, which will oppose her in the Timaru Cup, but in the meantime will run in the Hazlett Stakes at Wingatui, was paired with Donizetti for 1000 m yesterday. after that, and ran a length clear to finish the last 800 m in 49.85, and the final 600 m in 375. Noble Note’s trainer, John Bourne, would welcome any easing in the track before tomorrow’s feature race at Wingatui. In the Glen, the winner of her last two races for the Garth Jackson stable, showed she had thrived in the meantime by sprinting 1400 m in Imin 30.55, the last 800 m in 48.35, and the final 600 m in 35.3 s on the plough yesterday. Her next race will be the Timaru Cup, to be followed by the Kumara Nuggets. Upper Cut, another Timaru Cup candidate, sprinted 600 m in 39.2 s on the chip track yesterday. He had Secret Member for a
working companion. Beaufix, a promising two-year-old in the Prendergast team, also appeared on the chip track to sprint 600 m in 38.6 s alongside Jimmy Clark. She goes to Wingatui for the Champagne Stakes next week. Tuahiwi Daisy and Aussie Bound got through their 600 m on the chip track in 39.85. Mr Magoo, which will run for the Kerr stable in the Dunedin Guineas, recorded 50s for his 800 m on the No. 1 grass. Samasaan led Athol Brose by two lengths after running their last 800 m on the grass in 52.65. Aegean Princess could have easily bettered her 52.85, and Rattle the Sabre was let off with 53.35.
