Kiwi should be big attraction at Manawatu

Special correspondent Wellington The presence of Kiwi in the first leg of the T.A.B. double and a cluster of weight-for-age performers in the second leg are just two ingredients which make the first day of the Manawatu Christmas meeting an attractive one at Awapuni tomorrow. Kiwi heads the list in the Sherwood Motor Inn Handicap. It will be the first run for the chestnut since his third in the Sandown Cup. His presence, though, will ensure the race of great public interest. Fort Cheval and Curved Air from the north, along with Kerry Lane and Lomondy from the local region, are all form runners. Fort Cheval won at Te Aroha and last month won

the Woodville Cup. He has raced • well on the course before and his seventh in the Avondale Cup was not a bad effort. Curved Air last Saturday was second in the GovernorGeneral’s Cup, a promoted placing after the mare had been troubled in the straight. In the smaller field here she will be a grand prospect and may go out the favourite. Kerry Lane looks close to the best form, with a close second behind Twelve Gauge at Trentham two weeks ago. Lomondy was third there and has to be rated a good chance. The F.S.E.S. Stakes, once the Manawatu Challenge Stakes, has drawn Greatness and Magnitude, two fine performers in Australia. Magnitude, in particular,

won the Epsom. His last start failure was in the Ampol, but it was only the wet track that beat him as he chased a bonus. Abit Leica, sixth in the Potter Stakes, has some chance. His last run was a grand third in the Avondale Cup. Shifnal Prince, the winner over this distance last September, has placed form to show for an Australian campaign, while Commissionaire is no forlorn hope on a good track. The richest race is the 125,000 Eulogy Stakes, which has drawn a fine field, headed by Imperial Angel, Sierra Sand and Ma Chiquita, while Auto Air and Miss Emma shape up for another confrontation in the A.B.S. Juvenile.

Selections 12.10: Marocca, Hazel Miss, Seymour. 12.45: El Questro, Tranquil Sea, Brager. 120: Conceited, Exemplify, Myola. 125: Auto Air, Miss Emma, Squire Gray. 220: Lucky Dip, Pride of Avon, Mobility. 3.05: Imperial Angel, Ma Chiquita, Sierra Sand. 3.45: Fort Cheval, Kerry Lane, Curved Air. 420: Magnitude, Greatness, Commissionaire. 425: Defend, Ballane, Grand Junction.
