Meat main cause of drop in ‘basket’
Fluctuating meat prices were the main cause of the $4 decrease in the grocery “basket” this month.
Steak mince dropped 35c per 500 g, stewing steak 40c per 500 g and lamb leg chops 6c per 750 g. Some other prices also showed a slight decrease: tea 12c, flour 2c, margarine 2c, toothpaste 11c, and cheese 40c.
These can be attributed to fluctuations in supermarket prices as stores try to maintain their competitiveness. Increases were mainly in the processed meat lines with 450 g sausages up 36c, 250 g bacon up 55c and a 1.19 kg chicken up 17c.
