Conservationist honoured

PA Dunedin The memory of a man who devoted a lifetime to conservation and became internationally known through his efforts to save a rare alpine buttercup from extinction was honoured in Dunedin yesterday. Dr Lance McCaskill, of

Christchurch, who died in August, received a Peter Scott Merit Award last year in recognition of his highly significant achievements in conservation for his work with the Castle Hill buttercup. The award was made by the species survival commission of the International

Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

The award, a citation and a medallion, was presented to his daughter, Margery Blackman, by Professor Carolyn Burns, of the University of Otago. The Direc-tor-General of Crown Lands, Mr P. H. C. Lucas, read the citation.

The citation said Dr McCaskill’s “one-man campaign to save an extremely rare alpine buttercup from the brink of extinction has been an outstanding success.” “At a time when it is tempting to ask what one individual can do for conservation, Lance McCaskill stands out as an example and inspiration to us all,”
