The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, with his portrait, which was commissioned by the Christchurch City Council from the noted Christchurch painter, W. A. Sutton. The council adopted a policy of commissioning portraits of mayors as part of its civic art plan earlier this year. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery already holds portraits of two previous mayors. Mr Sutton’s painting is on display at the gallery during this month and January, and will then be hung in the civic offices. It shows Sir Hamish wearing the Mayoral chain of office, weight and value by a badge of office and the insignia of a Knight Bachelor.
