Hawkes Bay M P Hospital Board SPECIALIST GERIATRIC PHYSICIAN SPECIALIST PSYCHIATRIST SPECIALIST RADIOLOGIST SPECIALIST ENT SURGEON SPECIALIST ANAESTHETIST SPECIALIST PAEDIATRICIAN APPLICATIONS are invited for the above positions with the Hawkes Bay Hospital Board. Under the population based funding model, the Board is considerably underfunded and has a number of service developments approved for implementation or extention. A new 40 bed geriatric assessment/rehabilitation unit is being built at Hastings; the Board’s psychiatric services are based there and are linked with an expanding community centred mental health service. In addition to the standard radiology and ultrasound equipment at each hospital, there is a gamma camera located at Napier Hospital, and the Board has made application for approval to obtain a CAT scanner. The ENT post is an additional one to add to the services already provided, centred on Napier Hospital. The specialist anaesthetist position is based at Hastings and in addition to anaesthetic duties will Involve commitments in the Intensive Care Unit. The paediatric position is a fourth post established to extend services in the region and to support expanding community involvement. With regard to the post of geriatric physician, the Hawkes Bay Trust for the Elderly has indicated that it will make a grant available to assist in the training of such a specialist, and particularly to assist the retraining of an establised specialist (such as a general physician) who wishes to take up a career in geriatric medicine. The Hawkes Bay Hospital Board serves a population catchment of over 140,000 on the East Coast of the North Island. The Board maintains two general hospitals in the main population centres at Napier and Hastings. These hospital have a full range of basic services with some rationalisation of more advanced services divided between the two. The area has a pleasant climate, warm in summer and mild in winter. There is easy access to Taupo and a wide range of recreational facilities locally.
