Goods train ‘clips’ teenagers

PA Whangarei Three teenagers, sleeping alongside the railway track, had a lucky escape from death or serious injury at Hikurangi yesterday. They were clipped by a northbound goods train about 4.40 a.m., said the Railways’ Northland traffic manager; Mr Arthur Mothersill.

Cyril Edwards, aged 15, was admitted to Whangarei Hospital with; a pelvic injury and was reported in a satisfactory condition.

Lana White, aged 15, suffered cuts and bruises and was treated and discharged.

Cheryl Ruka, aged 15, escaped injury. Mr Mothersill said the young people had been sleeping with their feet “more or less” against the track.

They had been extremely foolish — and lucky, he said.
