AUSTRALIA Across-the-board rises

PA Sydney Australian stocks closed firmer as the market responded with across-the-board rises to stronger world metal and bullion prices, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 5.7 points to 980.4, the all industrials index had gained 4.2 points to 1455.8 and the all resources index had put on 6.5 points to 614.0. The gold index was up 3.3 points to 814.8. Turnover was 42.7 M shares worth ?73.2M with falls outnumbering rises by 228 to 196. BHP traded about 900,000 shares in Melbourne and Sydney, and closed 14c up at 840. Among other market leaders, CSR gained 6c to 362 and Bell Resources shed 10c to 490.

Heavyweight mining stocks fared much better, with Western Mining, CRA and MIM featuring in large special sales. CRA put on 6c to 526, MIM gained 8c to 255 and Western Mining 5c to 311. Comalco added 7c to 182.

The feeling among brokers on Monday that gold stocks may have been bottoming out following recent losses was realised, with the gold index recording its first gain after 14 consecutive falls.

Other industrials to move were AWA, up 14c to 550, Adsteam, up 10c to 970, Boral, up 6c to 310 and the Bell Group, down 10c to 1190. Banks traded easier with the ANZ down 4c to 433, National Australia Bank down 5c to 460 and Westpac steady on 450.

Share price index futures traded firmer with December closing at 988.5 from a previous close of 983.0 and March closing 10 points up at 997.5 from 987.5.
