Welfare booklet out

A new booklet for children entering Social Welfare homes has been published by the department. The comic-style guide has been released in response to an often-heard complaint by children that they did not know what was happening. The basic information in the booklet is designed to give children entering the care of the department a

better understanding of their situation. The guide details reasons why children can be sent to Social Welfare homes, what will happen to them, the involvement of the courts, rules of the houses, and rights of the residents. The booklet and artwork have been produced by Mr Chris Slane, of Auckland, who also wrote the text in

consultation with Social Welfare Department staff and children. It has been printed by the Government Printer. Almost 4000 children and young people are admitted to institutions and family homes administered by the department Of these about 3500 are admitted to the short-term regional facilities, boys’ and girls’ homes.
