New sub-station for Riccarton

Riccarton’s electricity supply equipment will be improved next year, the Riccarton Borough Council decided last evening; A new sub-station will be built behind the existing one in Mandeville Street to take some of the load off the main Foster Street substation. This new building will cost about $130,009. The borough’s electrical engineer, Mr Ed Hitchcock, said all the borough’s electricity feeder lines went into the Foster Street station. If anything went

wrong there, all the borough’s electricity supe could be lost until the was fixed. New cables and switching gear costing about $70,000 would also be installed as the existing equipment was old and had limited capacity, Mr Hitchcock said. This work was expected to be finished by next winter. The Mayor of Riccarton, Mr R. J. Harrington, said the new sub-station would be another safeguard for the borough’s electricity supply.
