End of season for fish firm

Wellington reporter No vessel from the Tae Chang Fishing Company, of South Korea, will be allowed to fish in New Zealand waters again this season. This comes after the payment by the company of $1.25 million for the return of the confiscated vessel Tae Chang 83. It was the second time in 12 months that the vessel had been sold back to its owner after conviction for fishing violations. It was first convicted and confiscated in December, 1984, resold to the company for $850,000 in April this

year, and issued with a new licence in May to fish-in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone. On October 1, the 55m trawler had gone again after its master had been convicted and fined again in August on three charges of misrecording and misreporting of position and catch. Once again, the $5 million trawler has been forfeited automatically to the Crown. At the same time, the licence of the company’s other trawler Tae Chang 87 expired with the end of the fishing season, and was not renewed.
