Canterbury dog wins N.Z. St Leger

PA Wellington Matagouri Rose, the sole South Island representative, scored a fine win in the New Zealand St Leger, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Wellington Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Hutt Park yesterday. Matagouri Rose came away best from an even start and was never headed after taking the lead coming out of the first bend. She hung on to win impressively but narrowly by a neck from an outsider, the Carterton-trained Blue Huntress, which chased her hard all the way. Dial a Dream was late getting clear and came home fast to take third three-quarters of a length away. Matagouri Rose is by Laurel Streak out of Matagouri Bub. She is owned by Messrs P. B. Murchison and B. Reveley and is trained by B. Kingston at Christchurch. There was a minor sensation before the St Leger when the pre-race favourite, the Aucklander, Uli Uli, failed to arrive at the course in time and was scratched. Greyhound racing rules dictate that a dog should be kennelled an hour before the first race of the meeting. However, the judicial committee of the Wellington club, on learning the capital’s airport was fog-bound, extended the time for Uli Uli’s arrival until 40 minutes before the start of the race. The plane carrying Uli Uli was diverted to Palmerston North and the bus taking him on to Wellington was further delayed so he did not arrive at the course until three minutes after the time set by the committee.

The Lower Hutt-trained Dark Reflex, after making a brilliant beginning from her

outside draw, led all the way to win the Woburn Stakes, second leg of the double.

Dark Reflex was two lengths v clear of Wild Release, with Renna Banks third another 2Ht lengths away. The winner is trained by Joe Tapiki, of Lower Hutt, who owns her in partnership with Mrs Pat Froude, of Auckland.
