A.S.I.O. to help N.Z?

PA Auckland The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation will supply the New Zealand Prime Minister, Mr Lange, with special information on the nuclear capabilities of United States warships, says the Scientists Against Nuclear Arms group. The Australian overseas military organisation would in effect spy on the Americans and relay the information, said a spokesman for the scientists, Mr Peter Wells.

“Mr Lange will be able to make an accurate assessment of what United States ships carry in nuclear weaponry through the security organisation, which has good contacts with American military Intelligence and the C.1.A.,” he said.

The information was not "sensitive” but could be gained from detailed operational history of the United States fleet. He believed that United States State Department officials were aware of the arrangement Mr Wells said he believed New Zealand’s External Intelligence Bureau, a branch of the Prime Minister’s Office, would receive the information.
