Soldiers visit grave
Army Signaller Junior Rangihuna, of Te Araroa, inspects the grave of Lance Corporal E. A. Yealands, , who died in Tonga during < World War H. Corporal Yealands was • killed in an accident while manning an observation post on the sparsely popu-
lated island of *£3o in 1943. A small group of New Zealand soldiers visited the grave during a recent exercise on the island with the Tongan Defence Service. It is thought that they were the- first New .Zealand soldiers to see the site since the war. ,
The grave has been tended for four decades by the villagers of Futu, but the . headstone has , been broken. The soldiers are arranging for a new headstone to be sent, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the■; New Zealand High Commission in Nuku’alofa.
