Parking fee rise approved

The goods and services tax will add an extra $280,000 to Christchurch City Council parking fees next year. It will mean that offstreet casual parking charges will increase to 40c a half-hour, and off-peak charges to 20c and 25c a half-hour. On-street meter charges will go up to 10c for 10 minutes in half-hour and hour parking zones and 10c for 20 minutes in twohour, three-hour, and fourhour zones.

The council approved the new charges last evening. They will come into effect on April 1. Each meter will have to be recalibrated and the label changed. The council’s parking superintendent, Mr Geoff Stephenson, said that the last review of prices was in February. When the charges were next reviewed the aim would be to make on-street and off-street rates the same. At present they differed by 10c a half-hour. Mr Stephenson said that the charges had to be increased by July 1 to cover projected costs. If they were not increased until October 1, the council would lose $125,000. April is the start of the council’s new financial year.
