Penalties for rape

Sir,—What a load of rubbish your correspondent, J. Varga, wrote on December 4. He/she states that ordinary men do not find anything wrong with rape, and that 66 per cent of men are capable ’’ of violence towards women. It should be painfully obvious that only a small percentage of the capable male population commits the crime of rape, that they can be identified as coming from a particular socio-economic background, and that the ordinary man in the street would be no more likely to rape the woman next door than he would be likely to shoot her husband or burgle their house. If the anti-rape lobby wants us ordinary men to lend them a hand, then they should stop this campaign of emotive generalisation and innuendo. The ordinary man is tired of having to answer to the problems of the entire world. — Yours, etc., RODGER DONALDSON. December 4, 1985.
