Perks for drivers

Sir,—The recent article on bus drivers getting a commission sounds like sour grapes. These people complaining would do better if they complained about the high prices put on goods when they hear a foreign accent. This does more harm to the tourist trade than drivers accepting gratuities. It could be a fact that the drivers know where the people get a better deal. Every job has its perk. With the pittance paid to drivers, is it any wonder they accept extra payments? These drivers are the backbone of the tourist trade. They have to put up with hazardous driving conditions and grumpy passengers. Some only have three days home in six weeks while the season is on. Competition is what this country needs. Why knock it?— Yours, etc., TED CALDWELL, Blenheim. December 12, 1985.
