Three golf teams gain top points

Weedons and Templeton in zone one and Waimairi Beach in zone two gained maximum points in the first round of the Canterbury junior inter-club stroke golf competition. Teams compete in two zones and a match for each team of four consists of two games, one at home, the other away. The gross scores of each player count in the team’s aggregate. A team which wins both games receives 2% points. If each team wins a game, they receive a point each, with an extra half point being awarded to the team with the lowest aggregate 36 holes for that match. In zone one, Weedons beat Russley at Weedons (315 to

352) and at Russley (382 to 431), while Templeton accounted for Harewood at Harewood (310 to 337) and at Templeton (308 to 331). Lincoln had the bye. Waimairi Beach beat Avondale at Avondale (311 to 322) and at Waimairi (327 to 350), while Christchurch, after beating Windsor narrowly at Windsor, defaulted its home game. Kaiapoi beat Waitikiri (342 to 383) at Waitikiri, but the return match was abandoned with greens under water at Kaiapoi. The best individual scores were 68 by Richard Hurley (Waimairi) at Avondale, and 74s by Michael Robertson (Weedons) on his home course and Alister McCall (Templeton) also at home.
