An Auckland volunteer search and rescue organisation discovered recently it did not qualify as an emergency service for the purposes of sales tax rebates from the Customs Department. Howick Sea Rescue, which has been established for 27 years, has been refused, a rebate on 15 telepaging units, worth more than $5OOO. The units were bought specifically to alert members of emergencies on the Hauraki Gulf, said the organisation’s senior operations officer, Mr Tom Rutherford. The . expected $lOOO rebate was about one-third of the annual budget. It was the first time the organisation had been refused a sales tax rebate on rescue equipment, he said. The Minister of Customs, Mrs Shields, told the Howick group that “part-time” rescue organisations such as itself, the coastguard and surf life-saving clubs did not qualify for a sales tax rebate on radio equipment ARRIVALS Saturday Act 7 (6.45 a.m.), 44,150, Wellington (Blueport).
