Victoria Sq. plan worry to Merivale
The Merivale Precinct Socity is concerned about the Christchurch City Council’s plans for the redevelopment of Victoria Square. The society’s chairman, Mr Kim Pettengell, said it was upset that the development could add another 7 or 8 per cent to rates. “With GST as well, it’s getting a bit much.” Development plans for Victoria Square include arches over a curved walkway, a' sunken courtyard, and green spaces. Mr Pettengell said the council’s proposal for the
development seemed to be an expensive option. “It is a large development and we are certainly concerned that it may add to our rates. “These structures are fine but there is a huge maintenance cost and we are trying to create more open space rather than close it in more.” Mr Pettengell said that the biggest cost appeared to be for the paved area and the canopies — “whereas you could pave and grass for less cost and still end up with a nice, clean, open space.”
