Dog on an ocean wave

By

LIZ ROWE

Most dogs are lucky to get an occasional trip, even if only to the vet, in their lifetime. But for Vanri, a four-month-old Chinese crossbred, the world is her oyster. Vanri is honorary first mate of the 22,992-ton bulk carrier Star Vanri, which arrived at Lyttelton on Thursday.

She was given to the ship’s crew by some fishermen in Shanghai, China, in August and since then has visited Canada and five New Zealand ports. On Sunday evening the ship is due to leave for Japan and from there it could be anywhere in the world for Vanri.

Shipboard life may not be every canine’s idea of fun, but Vanri is perfectly at

home in the maze of passageways and has the run of the ship when at sea. Nautical life has its limits, however — Vanri is not very fond of fish, according to the chief officer, Mr Jose Dormido.

Quarantine regulations mean Vanri is not allowed ashore in New Zealand, but when you are honorary first mate of a huge ship, who cares?
