Cooks may ‘go neutral’
PA Auckland The Cook Islands may have to “go neutral” because New Zealand’s antinuclear policies have left his country defenceless, says the Prime Minister of the Cooks, Sir Thomas Davis. During a brief stop in Auckland yesterday en route to Australia, he said: “We have no defence now. We were not consulted by the New Zealand Government on this matter, and
our whole defence was based on A.N.Z.U.S. as a reasonable defence umbrella. “When A.N.Z.U.S. went we were left without any service which could look after us.” Under the Cook Islands’ relationship of independence with free association with this country, the New Zealand Government is responsible for defence matters.
